Daytime

  1. Best light happens in the first and last hour of the day.
  2. Shoot with the sun behind you for brighter, more even light.
  3. Tap your subject first to lock focus and exposure.
  4. Turn on grid lines to nail the horizon every time.
  5. Crouch down for landscapes—low angles add drama.
  6. Include a person to show perspective to massive landscapes or objects.
  7. Wipe your lens. Seriously.

Wildlife

  1. Zoom with your feet first—move closer before pinching in.
  2. Hold the shutter to burst shoot—you’ll nail the moment.

Night sky

  1. Use night mode—it’s made for this.
  2. Find the darkest patch of sky you can.
  3. Prop your phone on a rock or tripod for stillness. Set a 3-second timer.
  4. Longer still means more stars in the shot.
  5. Turn off the flash. It only lights up 10 feet.
  6. Add a silhouette in the foreground—trees, rocks, a friend.
  7. Shoot before moonrise for the darkest skies.
